These Five Personality Traits Make You An Adult
When we turn eighteen, we are magically declared “adults”. But, most of us don’t truly earn the moniker until much later in life. When I think back to myself at eighteen, I was nowhere near an adult.
To be completely honest, only now, nearing three decades of existence, do I consider myself an adult (most of the time).
What does being an “adult” even mean?
Although there is no scientific reasoning behind adulthood, the line had to be drawn somewhere. In short, the age of majority begins when you can legally vote. In 1971, in the US, the age of majority actually used to be twenty-one. It was changed due to an outcry from impassioned young during the Vietnam War.
With adulthood, came the responsibility to purchase adult consumables such as alcohol and nicotine. But, the legal age of consumption was moved back to twenty-one after a litany of drunk driving accidents occurred.
Nowadays, the waters are adulthood are muddy. You can vote before you can drink. You’re allowed to buy a house before renting a car. Heck, physical maturation continues far into our twenties. So, what really constitutes being an adult?
